The settlement of Betar Illit has included the construction of highways and infrastructure that serve the settlement but are prohibited to Palestinians, forcing villagers to find alternative access routes. Israeli-only bypass roads have been constructed for ease of access to and from settlements but are prohibited for use by Palestinians. Road improvement attempts within the municipal boundaries of Wadi Foquin have been interrupted and/or prohibited by the Israeli military.
Wadi Foquin residents are also subject to flying checkpoints, restricting where and when they go. The Israeli Security Forces set up “flying checkpoints” at the gate, which are rolled out spikes alongside military personnel. Villagers are required to show identification and are allowed to pass only when the officer permits. These checkpoints restrict access to jobs, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.
